Plea over mystery painter

Macclesfield Express - - FRONT PAGE -

MYSTERY surrounds artwork by a former painter and decorator from the town.

The painting, from 1910, is signed by WH Pownall with the words ‘decorators, Jordangate’ on the back.

And staff at Adam Partridge Auctioneers & Valuers would like to find out more about the painting and its artist before the picture goes on sale in March.

Oliver Hancock, from the auctioneers, based on Withyfold Drive, said: “We’ve got a painting from 1910 by a WH Pownall that’s not particularly valuable but written on the back is ‘WH Pownall, Decorators, Jordangate, Macclesfield.

“We thought it might be interesting to readers of the Macc Express and wondered if perhaps any readers could shed any light on who WH Pownall was.”

The auction takes place on March 3 and 4 and the painting has an estimate of £20- £40.
