Runway return for cancer fighter Anne
AN AIR hostess currently undergoing treatment for cancer is preparing to return to the runway – only this time she will be walking down it instead of flying.
Anne Powell, 50, will be one of 50 models living with or affected by the disease to take to the Concorde Catwalk at Manchester Airport’s Runway Visitor Centre this summer to celebrate the opening of the new Maggie’s Centre at The Christie.
Organisers are now on the hunt for the remaining 49 models and are asking readers to nominate someone.
Anne, from Macclesfield, will be strutting her stuff with her son Harry, 16, who has been with her throughout her treatment.
She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction.
Two years later, Anne, who has worked for British Airways for 26 years, was told my doctors that she had T-cell lymphoma and was referred to The Christie Hospital.
After a stem cell transplant last summer, Anne spent four months in remission before finding out the cancer was back, and has just started chemotherapy again.
Margo Cornish, who lives on Withinlee Road, Prestbury, with husband Charlie Cornish, CEO of the Manchester Airport Group, is organising the event.
She said: “When anyone is at the receiving end of a cancer diagnosis their lives and the lives of those around them change in many ways.
“I know from working with people living with cancer that the impact can be significant. Gruelling chemotherapy and sur- gery can change their bodies and in many cases leads to a loss of confidence and self esteem.
“Maggie’s on the Runway is essentially a feel good fundraising event where we can raise awareness about the wonderful new Maggie’s support facilities that will be available for cancer patients in and around Manchester as well as a celebration of the courage of all our inspirational models.
“To celebrate the opening of the new Maggie’s Centre we want 50 models to take to our Concorde Catwalk at this exclusive fashion event, so we are looking for deserving nominees.
“We want to hear from anyone who has been touched by cancer.”
Each model will be treated to a fashion and beauty makeover by high street giants.
