Landlord morphs into marathon man
A PHENOMENAL physical feat – running seven marathons in seven days – will almost be a labour of love for a Macclesfield pub landlord.
For 34-year-old John Gartland has designed his epic route to take in a host of north west football clubs including Manchester United, Manchester City and his beloved team, Everton.
His gruelling feat to raise thousands of pounds for East Cheshire Hospice will begin at Macclesfield Football Club on April 25 and John will also run past the football grounds of Stockport, Oldham, Burnley, Accrington Stanley, Blackburn, Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Liverpool before heading back to Macclesfield on Sunday, May 1.
“I mapped out the route myself as I love my football and hoped it might give me a bit of inspiration along the way,” said John, also known as Morphman as he will be running in either a bright yellow or bright blue Morph suit along the 183 mile route.
“I’ve run marathons before, but I must admit this is going to be a real, personal challenge.”
Unlike high profile celebrity runners, John, who is the landlord at the Old Millstone pub in Waters Green, won’t have any large back-up team of physios and medics but he will be supported by Jason Curtis, a personal trainer from 5S Fitness, who will be giving him a professional sports massage after each marathon run.
And John hopes that other runners will keep him company by joining him along parts of the route – all of which are displayed on his special Facebook page www. facebook.com/ MorphmanJohn
John is particularly looking forward to his last day when he hopes up to 300 local runners will join him for the last 5k of his route.
“I’m hoping that people will sign up to join me for the last few miles of the route along part of Middlewood Way, finishing back in the pub car park on that Bank Holiday weekend,” said John.
“I reckon by that time, I’ll really need support for the final push.”
John is no stranger to marathon running after completing no less than 28 marathons in three weeks back in 2012.
He now hopes sponsorship will help him raise thousands of pounds for both the East Cheshire Hospice and Echo Hospital and Community Healthcare, the charity run by East Cheshire NHS Trust.
Further information on the entire route and how to sign up for the final 5k leg of the run are on John’s Facebook site or on his website morphman. co.uk.
