TOM Healey ensured Macclesfield Boys Boxing Club’s long journey to the Scottish borders was not a wasted trip when he registered a fine victory.

Having recently staged their annual show, it was time for MBBC to get back out on the road after just over three hours of stop start traffic on the M6, two coaches and two boxers finally arrived at the Border City show venue in Carlisle.

Scott Attward and Healey both weighed in, but unfortunately Attward’s opponent was a no show, so it was a wasted journey and an upset boxer having trained hard all week to make the weight.

It was all on Healey to make the trip worthwhile.

Having taken the bout just days earlier and after a three-hour trip north, facing an opponent on his own show was going to be a tough ask.

Healey warmed up well and found a quiet spot to say a little prayer and get himself into fight mode.

He was bout 10 of the night, so there was to be no early dart for the club’s representatives.

Healey’s opponent was James Rowland from Border City ABC. As they met in the centre of the ring, Rowland looked thick set and strong and as the bout kicked off he turned out to be a southpaw, leading with his right hand.

Both boxers were slightly courteous to start with but it wasn’t long before Healey made use of his range and started to score well with his shots.

Rowland was having success when he pushed forward and managed to catch Healey in the corners of the ring but round one was Healey’s.

Round two saw both boxers go toe to toe, which wasn’t working for Healey as the coaches shouted at him to go back to long range.

Thankfully he was listening and as soon as he stepped back and threw the shots they were on target again.

Round three was by far Healey’s best, keeping it simple by throwing then moving with Rowland pushing on, trying to use his strength and stature. However, Healey was just too slick and as the MBBC coaches expected, Healey was given the victory with some very nice comments from the judges and spectators on how well he had boxed.

Thankfully, with a massive win for the MBBC team, the trip home didn’t seem so daunting as everyone was happy with a good night’s work – even if it did mean a 1.30am return home!
