FA TROPHY THIRD ROUND MACC ................................. 0 TORQUAY.......................... 1
MACCLESFIELD Town’s FA Trophy dreams were ended in their third round replay with Torquay last week after Nathan Smith scored a second half header to separate the two teams.
The Silkmen had plenty of chances in the match at the Moss Rose, but poor finishing meant they were unable to find the net.
The defeat sees Macclesfield miss out on a potential trip to Wembley and a quarter-final tie with Isthmian League Premier Division side Bognor Regis Town this weekend.
In a first half that was high on tempo, Macc went close on several occasions, beginning when Andy Halls fired just wide of the post.
Dennis was the next to threaten when he got on the end of a pass from David Fitzpatrick, but the Torquay defence were able to cut out the move.
The visitors were struggling to test Shwan Jalal in the Macclesfield goal, with defender George Pilkington proving to be a rock in defence.
Chances dried up as the half progressed, with the next real opportunity coming on the 40 minute mark.
Jack Sampson, who had earlier fired over from distance for the Silkmen, connected with a cross from the right by Paul Turnbull but headed wide of the near post.
From the re-start, Macc were showing the greater purpose - and efforts in quick succession from Dennis and Chris Holroyd were kept out by deflections.
They still had to be alert at the other end though when the visitors fashioned their first chance of note on the hour mark, with Courtney Richards seeing a powerful effort just clear the bar.
Torquay began to come into the game more after that and they made their opponents pay for their wasted chances when they took the lead.
They won their first corner since half-time and took full advantage when Smith connected with the cross to head home and make it 1-0.
Macclesfield manager John Askey turned to his bench as he tried to find an equaliser, with striker Rhys Turner coming on.
He almost made an immediate impact when he played a part in the move that saw Holroyd go close, but he couldn’t get his effort on target.
The Silkmen continued to push in the closing stages but they couldn’t find a goal, with Torquay condemning them to a 1-0 defeat.
Macclesfield have now won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions following the result, with their only victory coming in the 2-0 triumph against Truro City in the FA Trophy second round.
