Hun­dreds sign jab pe­ti­tion

MPS are to de­bate calls to give the menin­gi­tis B vac­cine to all chil­dren af­ter hun­dreds of peo­ple from Mac­cles­field signed a pe­ti­tion.

More than 1,300 peo­ple from the town joined a cam­paign which at­tracted more than 800,000 sig­na­tures – the most any pe­ti­tion has ever re­ceived on the par­lia­ment web­site.

A to­tal of 1,317 sig­na­tures came from peo­ple liv­ing in the Mac­cles­field con­stituency – equiv­a­lent to one in ev­ery 71 peo­ple in the area. The pe­ti­tion asks that chil­dren of all ages be vac­ci­nated against Menin­gi­tis B, the bac­te­rial strain of the dis­ease, rather than just very young chil­dren. Pub­lic de­bate around menin­gi­tis ex­ploded af­ter the death of two-year-old Faye Bur­dett on Valen­tine’s Day. Menin­gi­tis B symp­toms in­clude fever, vom­it­ing and se­vere rashes, and in the worst cases sep­tica-emia, which can be fa­tal.
