Hundreds sign jab petition
MPS are to debate calls to give the meningitis B vaccine to all children after hundreds of people from Macclesfield signed a petition.
More than 1,300 people from the town joined a campaign which attracted more than 800,000 signatures – the most any petition has ever received on the parliament website.
A total of 1,317 signatures came from people living in the Macclesfield constituency – equivalent to one in every 71 people in the area. The petition asks that children of all ages be vaccinated against Meningitis B, the bacterial strain of the disease, rather than just very young children. Public debate around meningitis exploded after the death of two-year-old Faye Burdett on Valentine’s Day. Meningitis B symptoms include fever, vomiting and severe rashes, and in the worst cases septica-emia, which can be fatal. The petition can be found at petition. parliament.uk/ petitions/108072.
