Grandma celebrates centenary
A GREAT-GREATGRANDMOTHER who held the Olympic Torch when it passed through the town in 2012 has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Freda Pidgeon, from Harry Lawson court in Hurdsfield, says ‘hard work’ and a sense of humour is her secret to a long life and says she has enjoyed her later years more than the first.
Born in Sunderland in 1916, Freda moved to Macclesfield in 1953 with her late husband of 28 years, Ivor, who she met while working in the former Manchester department store Lewis’s cafe. The couple had three children -Joyce, 72, Marylyn, 67, and Ivor, 61.
With six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four-great-great grandchildren, the keen knitter takes pride in her appearance too.
She said: “Just because you’re old doesn’t mean you have to let yourself go.”
