Pals’ uplifting wins

Macclesfield Express - - SPORT - POWER LIFTING

FOUR friends showed what Macclesfield is made of when they won contests at a power lifting competition.

Matthew Nicholson, his partner Amanda Cunliffe, trainer Andy Gregory and Alan Lowndes each won their categories in the Midlands British Power Lifting competition to win places in the British power lifting finals in September.

They train at The Academy Group Transformation Centre, Waterside Mill, Macclesfield where Matthew is the owner and Andy works as a trainer. Amanda has four national records under her belt but it was the first time the lads have entered.

Matthew, 29, took it up to try and solve back pain he was suffering with.

He said: “I have a problem with a disc in my back and was told when I was 18 I would end up in a wheelchair. I’d been told lifting weights would be bad for my back but strength training has really helped.

“I have had little to no back pain and never in a million years did I think I could compete and even win a competition.”
