Trapped heron res­cued by spe­cial­ist fire­fight­ers

A HERON which be­came trapped in branches at a lake was brought to safety by an ex­pert an­i­mal res­cue team.

Fire­fight­ers in Mac­cles­field got the call about the trapped bird on Thurs­day, March 10.

They were called to Knight’s Pool, off Bank Street in Mac­cles­field to re­ports that the heron’s leg had be­come stuck in branches over­hang­ing the wa­ter in the fish­ing lake.

The crew was joined by Brave Watch from Knutsford which has ex­per­tise in an­i­mal res­cue.

The bird was brought to safety by two of­fi­cers be­fore be­ing handed to the care of the RSPCA.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Res­cue Ser­vice, said: “Fire­fight­ers were called out to res­cue a heron that had its leg stuck.

“The bird was safely res­cued, brought in to shore and handed into the care of an RSPCA of­fi­cer who took it to their sanc­tu­ary as it had suf­fered some dam­age to one of its wings.”

The crew was called at 3.36pm. Cheshire Fire and Res­cue Ser­vice has an­i­mal res­cue units with spe­cial­ist cloth­ing and equip­ment based at Knutsford and Bolling­ton fire sta­tions.
