Choral society ready for action with spring sing
MEMBERS of Prestbury Choral Society are warming up its vocal cords ahead of its spring concert.
Joined by guest leader Steven Wilkie, senior violin tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music, the choir will perform Schubert’s Mass in A Flat and Stanford’s Songs of the Fleet under the direction of Simon Mercer.
Steven, who has played with most British orchestras and performed many of the famous concertos, has also worked with revered conductors Sir Georg Solti, Sir Edward Downes and John Wilson.
He will complete the programme by performing the Bach Violin Concerto.
Choir member Cynthia Crewe said: “Schubert’s Mass in A Flat contains music of great tenderness, high drama and taut construction.
“Colourfully orchestrated, it is a wonderful sing for soloists and choir.
“Stanford, best known to church musicians for his service settings and anthems, is otherwise somewhat neglected.
“His excellent Songs of the Fleet, quiet and boisterous by turn, glorify our long maritime tradition.
She added: “Such an eclectic and excellent programme will make for a wonderful evening.”
The concert is on Saturday, April 16, at 7.30pm, at St Bartholomew’s Church, Chancel Lane, Wilmslow.
Tickets are £10, £9 concessions, available on the door, from prestburychoral.org or by calling 01625 584337.
