Ainslie’s America’s Cup quest boosted
MACCLESFIELD sailor Ben Ainslie has been given a boost in his hopes to bring the America’s Cup back to Britain after the launch of his team’s latest test boat.
The T3 boat was unveiled at the home of Ben Ainslie Racing in Portsmouth and is a 45 foot foiling catamaran that is only slightly shorter than the craft he will be using in Bermuda next May.
The craft will be used to refine the wing and hydrofoil control systems, as those key areas are not defnied by Cup rules.
There is just over a year to go until the Challenger Series begins, and Ainslie is confident of repeating his success from 2013 where he won the America’s Cup with Team Oracle USA.
“T3 is another fantastic piece of technology from our designers, engineers, shore team and key suppliers,” he said.
“It’s terrific to see the step changes we have made each time we launch a new boat. This is a new team, but it’s growing up fast. Really fast.”
BAR Head of systems and analysis Richard Hopkirk added: “This boat will allow us to test and develop across all the key areas that will impact our ultimate performance. It’s a critical progression in the search for fast, stable and continuous flight.”
