Hearty hike will raise cash for vital work
A HEART attack survivor is urging walkers to take a hike for local cardiac patients.
Nick Entwistle, from Macclesfield, suffered a heart attack when he was just 26.
He is back to full health thanks to the efforts of the Cardiac Rehab Team – a team of healthcare professionals who help patients recover from heart attacks and cardiac issues when they leave Macclesfield Hospital.
Now Nick is urging people to join Macclesfield’s annual Cardiac Rehab Walk, a 6.5-mile trek along Middlewood Way taking place on Sunday, May 15.
The event, which will raise money for East Cheshire NHS Trust’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Team, was established a quarter of a century ago.
It was inspired by a patient who set himself the goal of walking from his home in Congleton back to Macclesfield Hospital as part of his recovery from heart treatment.
Over the years the walk has raised thousands of pounds to purchase vital equipment to aid the Cardiac Rehab Team’s work.
Nick, a social media expert, has benefited from that fundraising and at Christmas, directed the video for the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir’s Christmas number one single.
Nick, of Catherine Street, said: “Having a heart attack at any age would be difficult to deal with but at 26 I felt like life was all over.
“However, after leaving hospital, taking part in the Cardiac Rehab Team’s classes at Macclesfield Leisure Centre really helped me to rebuild my confidence and allow me to do things – like help build a campaign to get the NHS Choir to Christmas number one.”
The walk starts at Tesco supermarket on Hibel Road at 9.15am, when participants will be taken by coach to Nelson Pit Visitor Centre in Higher Poynton, where they will walk back to Macclesfield.
Paula Spray, cardiac rehab co-ordinator, said: “The walk provides a great, fun opportunity for people to raise money for their local NHS services and boost their own heart health at the same time.
“The money makes a great difference to our work to get people fit and active again following heart treatment.
“Cardiovascular disease is one of the biggest killers in the UK, and money raised will go a long way to helping the hundreds of heart patients we treat every year.”
