Former teacher hoping show is stuff that dreams are made on
A FORMER primary school teacher turned drama group creator will stage her latest play at Fallibroome Academy.
Claire Beresford, who runs Wassadamo Drama in several Macclesfield schools, including Prestbury Primary, where she taught, will put on Alan Ayckbourn play, ‘Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations’, on Wednesday, May 18.
The play features year six and seven students, including three of her former pupils, and centres on the extraordinary powers of Ernie Fraser, a dreamer whose thoughts have the worrying habit of becoming reality.
Wassadamo is an acronym of a quote from Shakespeare’s The Tempest: ‘We are such stuff as dreams are made on’, and Claire’s mission is to instil the joy of drama in her young performers.
She said: “I have so much fun and am so inspired with how the children embrace the opportunity to perform once they’ve bitten the bullet and got up there in front of an audience – often shaking!
“There is a transformation, which is lovely to see. The effect can be huge as it gives them so much more confidence in themselves. And for me, it just goes to show you should follow your dreams.”
Claire now runs four drama groups at Prestbury Primary, Whirley Primary and Fallibroome Academy, as well as running drama workshops. Drama sessions at Prestbury youth club are also planned.
She added: “What’s really nice about this play is that three year seven students in it – Ethan Hadfield, Tallulah Wyer and Olivia Leigh, were in my year five class at Prestbury Primary.”
Also starring in the production are Jools Taylor, from Nether Alderley Primary, Jessica Pond, Daisy Tighe and Sophia Anderson-Bhatia from Prestbury Primary, and Tom Rayer, Miriam Turner, Annabel Axcell and Sophie Foulkes from Whirley Primary.
Claire’s daughter, A-level drama student, Eliza Beresford, and Sam Ashall, studying A-level drama and dance, have supported the group, who are rehearsing at Fallibroome, supported by Karen Fay, the school’s head of performing arts. The play is at 7.30pm.
Tickets are available at Prestbury, Nether Alderley and Whirley Primary schools and Fallibroome Academy, from claire @ wassadamodrama.com, or on 07496 374446.
