Getting a kick out of footgolf
FOOTGOLF is one of the fastest growing sports in the country as well as the USA and Europe and Styal Golf Club were proud hosts of Stage 3 of the North of England Regional Tour.
It was staged on the excellent Par Three course which has helped develop FootGolf in the region in the past two years.
There are ten stages in the Tour and the overall winner will represent the UK in the Jansen Cup which is a Ryder Cup style event against the USA in Palm Springs in January 2017.
The next five places in the order of merit will be invited to play in the Jansen Cup Shootout to win the final place in the UK team.
There are good quality prizes to be won at each qualifying event and the top players out of the 36 who competed at Styal were Jay Parkinson on -11, Marc Cowell -9 and Mike Downey and local star Paul Boulton, both -6.
Matt Riches, from the UK FootGolf Association, said: “Footgolf is growing rapidly in the region and is open to all age groups and as well as Styal the other venues in the area are at Burnage Par Three, Oldham GC, Cheadle Bruntwood Park, Oldham GC, Prestwich GC, Whitefield GC, Adlington DR, Haigh Hall GC, Knights Grange GC and Chester.
“Full details of what is involved with Footgolf and how to get into playing can be found on the website www.ukfootgolf. com and for anyone interested it can provide a competitive, skilful and disciplined sport combining the best of golf and football at some terrific venues.
”Success at the sport can also lead to playing in regional, national and international competitions.”
Styal seniors played their first medal of the season and Michael Hannon led in with 73, one less than Richard Armstead, Dermot Clancy and Bob Skilling.
It was also close in a Wednesday Stableford with Harrison Peck winning a cpo on 33 points from Tom Bloor, one more than Peter Cordwell and David Murray.
Styal ladies were also in Stableford action with Susannah Middleton leading in with 33 points from Nancy Chorlton 32 and Claire Whitney 31.
