Community stalwart Wendy rewarded for her dedication

Macclesfield Express - - CHARITY ROUND-UP -

A COMMUNITY volunteer has been given a ‘local star’ award for her dedication.

Wendy Baguley, who works with adults with learning disabilities, was nominated for the Local Star competition run by Tesco Metro in the run up to the Barnaby Festival.

Wendy, who works with adults with learning disabilities and volunteers at Windyways Animal Shelter, was given a £25 gift card and £500 to give Windyways Trust.

Wendy, from Macclesfield, said: “I am so thankful to have won the Tesco competition or even to have been nominated!

“I wanted to donate the £500 cheque to Windyways as the work they do is fantastic and they need as much funding as possible.

“I’d like to thank Tesco for the gift card and also the opportunity to give back to our local community.”

The theme for this year’s Barnaby Festival is ‘Space’.

As one of the sponsors of the event, which takes place in June, staff at the store came up with the idea to run the competition to reward one of the ‘local stars’ in the community.

It was run in store across three weeks and customers were encouraged to nominate a person who strives to make a difference, who dedicated time and effort to the community and/or a person who is a role model within the community.

Liam Davies, deputy store manager, said: “We’re delighted to present Wendy with her gift card.

“When we heard about all the voluntary work she carries out in the local community and the care she provides to both adults with learning difficulties and vulnerable animals, we wanted to recognise her work.

“The standard of nominations we received were incredibly high and it took a lot of deliberation to decide on a winner!”

Mr Davies added: “The Local Star Competition was a great opportunity to recognise some amazing people that you might not normally hear anything about – whose stories are inspiring, humbling, cheering and a privilege to share to the local community.”
