Hats off to millinery success for Christine
A WOMAN is mixing with the millinery elite after a whirlwind three year journey.
Christine Damerum was introduced to the craft of making hats by a fellow member of Adlington Women’s Institute (WI).
She was inspired to take a introductory course which ignited her passion for hats.
Christine took another course in felt hat making thanks to a bursary from the Cheshire Federation of Women’s Institutes.
Firmly hooked on hats, Christine signed up for a course with Rose Cory, the milliner to the late Queen Mother and known worldwide as ‘the milliners milliner’.
Christine has trained at the London Millinery School under Rose for the last three years, working alongside prominent milliners and fashion designers who work with Vivienne Westwood and on period costume dramas such as Downton Abbey and Mr Selfridge.
Growing in confidence Christine entered a number of high profile competitions. She reached the finals of Irish Milliners design competition The Hatwalk in 2014 and 2015, winning third place at the annual event in March.
Christine has entered two more prestigious competitions and is waiting to see if she has been successful – the Worshipful Feltmakers Design Awards 2016 and the International Hats Art Competition 2016 at the Atelier du Chapeau in Lyon, where her hat entry will be exhibited for six months. If she is placed in the top four, her hat will remain on display in the museum.
Christine is now a successful milliner in her own right, taking commissions for hats for a wide range of events including bespoke creations for Ascot, weddings, christenings, Buckingham Palace and St James Palace events.
Christine, who lives in Glossop, was able to wear one of her designs at the WI Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in 2015.
Having been encouraged and supported by other successful milliners Christine is also sharing her skills through workshops, talks and demonstrations, and recently passed on her skills to WI members.
Jackie Shaw, secretary of Adlington WI, said: “All the members have watched with interest as Christine has gone from strength to strength on her millinery journey and we are proud to have been part of it.”
