Church friends bid to walk Hadrian’s Wall in just 48 hours
TWO friends are taking on a walking challenge to support a charity which helps adults with learning disabilities.
Jim Newns, 48, and Simon Hampson, 38, will be walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall – 84 miles – in just 48 hours.
The massive challenge will take place on June 25 and 26.
The friends, who both attend Macclesfield’s Calvary Church on the Weston estate, want to raise funds for Time Out Group that works in Wilmslow and Macclesfield providing social, sports and leisure activities for adults with learning disabilities.
Jim and Simon came up with the idea while on holiday with their families in Cumbria.
Jim said: “We visited parts of the wall last February and walking the wall has been an ambition of mine for years. Simon suggested we could attempt to walk it in two days.”
The pair have been training hard and recently walked to and from Buxton in one go as part of their preparation.
Jim said: “We’ll be setting off at 4am and walking until 7pm or 8pm on both days. The biggest thing we need to be aware of is avoiding any injuries and keeping our feet healthy.”
The pair are both fitness fanatics, so are used to putting their bodies through their paces.
Fortunately, they will have friends Mandi Sproston and Matt Tamken, who are trustees for Time Out alongside them. They have volunteered as the support team for the walk, offering food, liquids and fresh clothing along the way.
Jim lives in Gawsworth with his wife Jindra and children Bailey, nine and Jack, seven.
Simon lives near South Park with wife Angela, son Alfie, seven, and teenage daughter Becky.
Jim said they’ve had similar reaction from most people including their own families, when they have explained their plan. He said: “They all think we’re mad. People normally take on that challenge in five days, so it’s going to be pretty tough going, but I reckon we can do it.”
The pair hope to raise £2,000 for the charity, but will be content with whatever goes to the cause.
Meanwhile Time Out members are also planning to precede the event more locally by doing a sponsored walk of their own. Theirs will go from St Bart’s church in Wilmslow to the Boddington Arms pub. Visit charitychoice.co.uk/ fundraiser/jimnewns/ hadrians-wall-in-48hours.
