KING’S Rugby stalwart Guy Mason is passing the ball to gritty Yorkshire fly half Giles Hetherington with King’s rugby on a high.

Recently married Guy, 43, has been Head of Rugby at King’s for the last six years, and a tough scrum half and latterly coach at Macclesfield Rugby Club all his career.

Now he is moving North to take up a job at The Royal Grammar School Lancaster and King’s have appointed former Bradford and Bingley fly half and current Halifax player coach Giles Hetherington as his replacement.

Guy said: “It’s been a wonderful six years and I couldn’t have signed off at a better time with King’s winning The Bowl at the Rosslyn Park Sevens last month.”

Other highlights include reaching the quarter final of the Daily Mail National Cup at Northampton Grammar School, going on both the school tours to Canada and South Africa and organising next year’s tour to Australia.”

He added: “At Macclesfield I remember playing every Cheshire Cup Final and winning promotion to National League One.

“But above all it’s been working with the boys and the support of staff and parents I value above all else. Whatever age, whatever level I found the boys have always had immense pride in wearing the shirt and that shone through on the field.”

Giles has been schooled on the tough West Yorkshire circuit combining playing National League rugby with a developing teaching career at his old school Crossley Heath School in Halifax.

He said: “King’s is one of England’s great rugby schools and I hope to maintain the tradition that Guy and many rugby men before him have set.”

He added: “I join King’s at a time of great transition especially in the junior game with new legislation coming in to improve health and safety.

“It’s important we move the game forward but also maintain those core values of playing hard and fair and respect for one another that truly characterises our game and makes it such a wonderful grounding for both young men and women.”
