SATURDAY marked an important day for the visitors Macclesfield Cricket Club, at a phenomenal Neston cricket ground.
Eager for their first league win – after a few crucial games had been rained off – the Macclesfield 1st XI were keen to get on the field and showcase there skills.
Captain Rob Porter lost the toss and was asked to have a bat, the first time in the current season the side were elected to bat first.
Opening batsmen Oli Marsden and John Birchall set up the game beautifully with an opening stand of 162 in tough batting conditions, before Marsden was trapped LBW for 43.
This didn’t stop Birchall though as he went on to make a brilliant hundred off just 102 balls.
Nick Bertus played a good innings of 38, continuing his good form with the bat.
A middle order collapse saw the visitors set a target of 231-8 in very tough batting conditions for Neston to chase.
Opening bowler Birchall produced an outstanding bowling performance as he bowled a superb spell, taking six wickets for 51 runs in his 14 overs, leaving the home side no chance of getting into the game.
Opening bowling partner Craig Melrose also bowled well and built pressure from the other end, he himself picking up a well deserved two wickets.
Golden arm Chris Moores couldn’t be kept out of the game as he continued his wicket feast and picked up the final two wickets.
The award for man of the match was an obvious one given the performance by Birchall with an outstanding knock of 110 and brilliant bowling figures of 6-51.
Overall a great performance by the visitors saw Neston being bowled out for just 110 meaning Macclesfield would come home with a 121 run win and a valuable 25 points!
