Van Helsing worked in Macclesfield
HORROR film icon Peter Cushing used to work in Macclesfield, it’s been revealed.
The late actor made his name in the Hammer Studios horror films of the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, most notably as Baron Victor Frankenstein and Dr Van Helsing.
But before finding fame Cushing, who died in 1994, found himself working as silk scarf designer.
Macclesfield Museums Facebook page revealed said that early in his career after the war, he had little money for presents, so for Christmas 1946 made his wife a scarf painted with Dickensian characters, which was spotted by the owner of a Macclesfield textile mill.
It added: “The next day he offered Peter Cushing a job creating designs for silk scarves and went on to design silk scarves for the Festival of Britain and the Queen’s Coronation.”
