Van Hels­ing worked in Mac­cles­field

HOR­ROR film icon Peter Cush­ing used to work in Mac­cles­field, it’s been re­vealed.

The late ac­tor made his name in the Ham­mer Stu­dios hor­ror films of the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, most notably as Baron Vic­tor Franken­stein and Dr Van Hels­ing.

But be­fore find­ing fame Cush­ing, who died in 1994, found him­self work­ing as silk scarf de­signer.

Mac­cles­field Mu­se­ums Face­book page re­vealed said that early in his ca­reer after the war, he had lit­tle money for presents, so for Christ­mas 1946 made his wife a scarf painted with Dick­en­sian char­ac­ters, which was spot­ted by the owner of a Mac­cles­field tex­tile mill.

It added: “The next day he of­fered Peter Cush­ing a job cre­at­ing de­signs for silk scarves and went on to de­sign silk scarves for the Fes­ti­val of Bri­tain and the Queen’s Coro­na­tion.”
