Experience was vital in cup victory

MACCLESFIELD Town goalkeeper Craig Ross believes that his side’s added experience earned them the victory against Walsall in the FA Cup.

The Silkmen pulled off the upset by defeating the League One side at the Banks’ Stadium to progress to the second round.

Macc boss John Askey had pointed out that Walsall having a young side may work against them, and Ross agreed that played a pivotal role.

“It was a big win which is huge for the club. We were going into it against league opposition but we knew we could get a result if we played well and the lads did,” he said.

“You’ve got to back yourself. We’re a confident bunch of lads and we’ve been playing well this season, so we knew we could do a job no matter where it was.

“We’ve got a few more experienced players than they have. We’re a mix of youth and experience so we knew we could get amongst them and stop them playing.

“Macclesfield have got a good history of cup runs and knocking out big teams, and there are still photos around the ground and changing rooms about some of the past results we’ve had.”
