Ex-soldier’s dream to bring fitness to all

Macclesfield Express - - THE LAUGHING BADGER - STUART GREER

AFORMER soldier has launched a new career as a fitness coach.

Jason Curtis, 27, spent six years in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and became a physical training instructor.

Now he wants to give people of all ages and abilities the type of training elite athletes get.

His business, 5S Fitness, launched last year with a few clients. But it has become such a success story that Jason has been forced to take over a bigger spot on Hurdsfield Road.

Jason, who runs the business alongside his girlfriend and fellow coach Lisa Ashcroft, said: “Strength and conditioning is the physical and physiological development of athletes for elite level performance. I have taken these principles and built 5S Fitness with an aim of bringing that style of coaching to the masses.

“I am not trying to reinvent the wheel, but give access of the top kind of coaching to the general public.”

Since opening the business Jason has helped people with all ages, from eight-year-old children to a 70-year-old recovering from heart surgery.

He said: “People of all ages and backgrounds are far more capable than they think and we prove that to them.”

Jason grew up in Wilmslow and had an interest in coaching before joining the army when he was 19. He trained for the front line and did tours of Afghanistan from his base in Cyprus.

He said: “I always loved the physical training and did every qualification I could to improve my skill set, including deep tissue massage.”

Jason later became a personal training instructor and eventually was training the next generation of infantry at Catterick. He said: “It was there I started running my own boot camps and realised I wanted to go out on my own.”

He left the army two years ago and moved to Macclesfield, where he has built up his client base and taken on more coaches, including former Army sniper James Skelham.

Jason, who lives on Park Lane, said: “It was a struggle at first but then word got round and suddenly the phone was ringing off the hook. I’m now working 15-hour days just to keep up.”

Jason is planning to start running specific training programmes for those planning to take on the Born Survivor challenge at Capesthorne Hall.
