That’s prob­a­bly the sin­gle big­gest ques­tion fac­ing wine con­sumers - par­tic­u­larly if, as I sug­gest here, you spend a bit more on a wine for a spe­cial oc­ca­sion such as the Cal­i­for­nian Caber­net Sau­vi­gnon listed be­low.

Faced by a wall of la­bels at the su­per­mar­ket, it’s no won­der peo­ple opt for wines based on what they know about grape va­ri­eties.

Buy­ers might go for a New World Chardon­nay de­spite the huge dif­fer­ences in qual­ity and styles, and per­haps ig­nore a Ma­con-Vil­lage, for ex­am­ple, be­cause they don’t re­alise it too is made from Chardon­nay.
