Swim and cy­cle he­roes on sports awards short­list

SOME of the town’s top sport­ing he­roes are short­listed to be BBC Sports Per­son­al­ity of the Year 2016.

Golden cou­ple Ja­son and Laura Kenny, and Par­a­lympic leg­end Sarah Storey, are among the 16 nom­i­nees an­nounced on Mon­day af­ter their spec­tac­u­lar per­for­mances at Rio 2016.

Laura and Ja­son, who live in Chelford and wed in Mac­cles­field in Septem­ber, have a to­tal of 10 Olympic golds be­tween them.

The pair, who train to­gether at Manch­ester Velo­drome, scooped five of those golds dur­ing this sum­mer’s spec­tac­u­lar Games, which saw Team GB fin­ish sec­ond in the league ta­ble. Laura tweeted: ‘So there we go .. Honoured to be nom­i­nated for @BBCSPOTY along with some in­cred­i­ble ath­letes.’

Also nom­i­nated is for­mer Poyn­ton High School stu­dent Dame Sarah Storey, Bri­tain’s most dec­o­rated fe­male Par­a­lympian.

Af­ter three gold medals in Rio this sum­mer, Storey, who lives in Dis­ley, has won a grand to­tal of 14 golds in swim­ming and cy­cling. She said: “It’s an un­der­state­ment to say I am honoured to be on the short­list and along­side such in­cred­i­ble fel­low ath­letes and as the only road cy­clist.”

The trio join a stel­lar line-up in­clud­ing world num­ber one ten­nis player Andy Mur­ray, Le­ices­ter striker Jamie Vardy, boxer Ni­cola Adams, foot­baller Gareth Bale, ath­lete Mo Farah and gym­nast Max Whit­lock. The winner will be an­nounced at a cer­e­mony in Birm­ing­ham on De­cem­ber 18.
