Trip down memory lane at support day
RESIDENTS took a trip down memory lane at a dementia day centre.
Age UK Cheshire East has opened a day support service in its new centre on Henderson Street, Macclesfield to provide activities for residents with dementia and to give carers a break.
Activities tie in with ‘reminiscence therapy’ which involves talking about things from the past, using prompts such as photos, objects or music.
Each service user has a scrapbook to record their thoughts, sing-a-longs help to spark memories and Betsy the cockapoo visits, which helps take people back to a time when they had pets.
Jennette Brown, services director, said: “We always knew this type of day support was needed. However we could not envisage the amount of laughter, conversation and interaction in all the activities from those who attend.
“It is really motivating to see not only those attending having fun, but also receiving feedback from carers about how it provides them with some extra time for themselves.”
Sessions run Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4pm in Macclesfield. Call 01625 660527.
The charity is always looking for new volunteers.
