LOCAL councillors have reacted to the shocking figures.

Coun Chris Andrew, of Macclesfield South ward, said obesity is caused by ‘lack of exercise and unhealthy diet’.

He said: “Physical activities are far better than social media such as Snapchat, Instagram and FaceTime while eating junk food.”

Coun Alift Harewood, Macclesfield West and Ivy said: “Fattening foods are cheap and available, pocket money can be freely used for the access to fat and sugary foods.”

Coun Beverley Dooley, Macclesfield central, believes opening school play grounds and fields at weekends could help the problem.

Coun Mick Warren, Macclesfield East, blamed ‘very poor’ sports and recreation facilities and roads that are ‘too busy to encourage children to cycle anywhere’.

He added: “The bottom line is that this generation’s children are too inactive and consume too many calories”.
