Banister brace sinks home side Halebank
CHESHIRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE TWO
AFC Macclesfield were victorious after picking up a comfortable win at Halebank.
It was a return to Widnes and the ground where AFC Macc clinched the championship last season, with their sights now set on repeating the success in the division above.
It was always going to be a tough game with both teams needing a result. Mike Meszaros made his debut in midfield for Macclesfield and will prove to be a good acquisition in the run in for the title.
Macc had most of the first half play but they couldn’t convert their chances into goals. Halebank were also making chances on the break, but the Macclesfield defence and in particular, Nick Ward in goal, kept the hosts at bay and it was 0-0 at half-time.
After the break, Macclesfield started to take control and in the 70th minute, Jack Banister broke down the resilient Halebank defence with what could arguably be the goal of the season.
Banister controlled the ball 25 yards out, chipped it over a defender and volleyed into the top corner.
Macc went in search of the second and in the 80th minute, Scott Wright received the ball on the left hand side and fed Banister, who knocked the ball past the defender and slotted into the back of the Halebank net.
AFC Macclesfield Reserves fought out a goalless draw at Middlewhich Town to maintain their quest for promotion.
