AFC keep promotion dream alive
CHESHIRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE ONE AFC MACCLESFIELD . 3 GRAPPENHALL ........... 0
AFC Macclesfield faced Grappenhall Sports from Warrington at the SSV last Saturday hoping to add to their league points tally for their push for the top of League One.
Macclesfield went into the game lying fourth with games in hand.
At two ends of the spectrum, AFC Macclesfield are pushing for the title and Grappenhall fighting for their league 1 life.
It was always going to be tough for Macclesfield who knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game, especially the way that Grappenhall had set up their team.
Grappenhall, in a very defensive shape, clearly had a game plan.
Macclesfield started to play some good football but were finding it hard to break down a nine man defence.
The first real opportunity fell to Tom Bowey.
He beat the offside trap but was faced with the on rushing Grappenhall goalkeeper David Kennedy.
Bowey’s effort beat the goalkeeper, but it brushed the outside of the post.
Continuing the good football, Macclesfield pushed for the opener, but couldn’t unlock the Grappenhall defence and the first half ended goalless.
AFC Macclesfield started the second half quickly and just after two minutes in, they were awarded a free kick 35 yards out from the Grappenhall goal.
Jonny Cavanagh swung in the free kick which Tom Bowey met perfectly at the far post to tap the ball into the net.
Finally, the resilient Grappenhall defence conceded.
Macclesfield pushed for the second and on 65 minutes, Jack Hunter jinked in between two defenders in front of goal but was brought down inside the box as he was about to shoot.
Jonny Cavanagh stepped up to take the penalty and made it 2-0.
Five minutes later, it was 3-0.
Jay Burgess finished a fantastic move by Macclesfield.
With great precision, he side footed the ball past the goalkeeper, placing the ball inside the far post.
AFC Macclesfield continued to press, but couldn’t find a 4th.
A relatively comfortable afternoon saw Macclesfield claim all three points and maintain their quest for promotion.
AFC Macclesfield Reserves had a disappointing result away to Golborne Sports Reserves, losing 4-1 to the Warrington club.
With only two games left to play in the league, they need the remaining six points to gain promotion.
Wednesday 5th April is cup final night for the Reserves.
They will be playing Linotype Cheadle HN Reserves in the Final of the Cheshire Football League Reserves Cup at Barnton FC, Northwich. Kick off 7-45pm. All support welcome!
