Award honour for part-time soldier Helen
APART-TIME soldier from Macclesfield has been honoured by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant at the annual Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards for Greater Manchester.
Sergeant Helen Porter, 47, is a senior resuscitation practitioner with the NHS, but also serves with the Army Reserve medics 207 (Manchester) field hospital.
She was awarded Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit, recognised as a laudatory honour throughout the Armed Services, in recognition of her exceptional service with the Army Reserve.
The presentation was made by Mr Warren Smith, Her Majesty’s LordLieutenant for Greater Manchester, during a ceremony held at Gorton Monastery.
Helen joined the Army Reserve in 2006 as a combat medical technician and in 2010 she deployed to Afghanistan in the rank of corporal, providing critical care to severely injured personnel.
She is also at the forefront of her unit’s commu- nity engagement project with Trafford Council, ‘Heart Start’, teaching basic life support to the public and training them to use defibrillators.
She said: “This award came as a complete surprise. I am proud to be a Reservist, and I am honoured to receive the LordLieutenant’s Certificate of Merit.”
Colonel Mark Underhill, chief executive of the North West Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association which runs the awards, said: “The LordLieutenant’s Awards give us an opportunity to recognise the selfless commitment and dedication of the men and women who serve in our nation’s Reserve Forces. Sergeant Porter is the epitome of a highly committed Reservist, and is most worthy of receiving the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit.”
The annual ceremony, which celebrates the achievements of members of the Reserve Forces and Cadet organisations, saw 19 adults and young people from across Greater Manchester honoured.
