Houldsworth pair take Cup back home

THE Bal­four and Houldsworth com­pe­ti­tions have been run­ning in the Manchester area for well over 110 years and at­tract ex­cel­lent en­tries for the com­pe­ti­tions they run through­out the sea­son.

The Houldsworth Cup is a Pairs Bo­gey com­pe­ti­tion and it was hosted by Wors­ley Golf Club in ex­cel­lent style.

Houldsworth Golf Club has a great record in B and H com­pe­ti­tions and have had five pre­vi­ous win­ners.

The club were de­lighted when their dy­namic duo of Pete Burgess (hand­i­cap 8) and Dave Fin­ley (hand­i­cap 10) posted a great score of +6 to win a cpo from three other pairs to bring the Houldsworth Cup back to their club.

For­mer Romi­ley and now Ring­way Golf Club and Cheshire leg­end Ron Har­ri­son showed his class in the Cheshire Pres­i­dent’s Day com­pe­ti­tion.

It was held at the pris­tine venue of Ch­ester Golf Club, the home club of the County Pres­i­dent Sean Ritchie, and in the sin­gles Stable­ford Ron, who plays off two hand­i­cap posted 35 points to fin­ish ahead of Gareth Bradley (Bramhall GC) 34 and Wilm­slow’s An­drew Hen­shall 33. Also in the mix with 32 points were Brian Hum­fress (Ch­ester), John Clark (Ch­ester), Steve Brit­ton (Ch­ester) and JP O’Neill (Royal Liver­pool).

It’s get­ting down to the wire in the MDLGA Bell Cup – the big­gest re­gional com­pe­ti­tion for ladies club teams of its type and in the coun­try and has been played for since 1911.

The re­main­ing teams (with first teams not nec­es­sar­ily at home) is: War­ring­ton v Sandi­way; Wi­gan v Mel­lor and Town­scliffe; Leigh v Ac­cring­ton; Swin­ton Park v Prest­bury; Hay­dock Park v Hind­ley Hall; Green­mount v Stand; Great Lever and Farn­worth v Shaw Hill; Walmer­s­ley v Dids­bury.
