Council tax discount crackdown

CHESHIRE East is cracking down on residents claiming council tax discounts.

The council is running data checks on households currently claiming single person’s discount on their tax – which reduces their bill by 25 per cent.

They say they will be using ‘sophisticated data-matching technology’ to carry out the checks and cross referencing addresses.

Councillor Paul Bates, cabinet member for finance and communities, said: “It would be advisable for individuals to let us know about changes in their circumstances, so it makes sense to tell us as soon as possible.

“Even if you were living alone when you received your bill for the year, if another adult is living with you now, we will need to re-calculate the amount you need to pay.”

Anyone making a false claim will have their discount withdrawn, and people failing to respond to two written requests for further information regarding the matter will also have their discount withdrawn.

You can inform the council of any changes by visiting the council tax section of the authority’s website or by calling 0300 123 5013.
