Coin goes to auction
ONE of Charles Roe’s payment ‘tokens’ from the 18th century is expected to sell for up to £40 at auction.
Roe played a huge part in the town’s silk industry, but was also involved in the mining and metal industry, where he commissioned a coin with his image on.
The 1790 Macclesfield Token, inscribed ‘MACCLESFIELD HALFPENNY,’ was paid to his workers and could be used in mill shops. It will be auctioned at Adam Partridge Auctioneers and Valuers on August 10-11.
