PLANS have been submitted to convert a former private members club into apartments.

The application by Summit Living Ltd is to transform the New Liberal Club on Boden Street in the town centre into six two-bedroom a apartments.

The four-storey b building overlooks A Aldi supermarket and is next door to the Samaritans.

The plans are with Cheshire East Council for a decision.

The club has been closed for some time but in its heyday was a very popular sports and social club, with snooker tables and darts.

In documents architect Andrew Ellis said the proposal makes an effective use of previously developed land within a town centre and would contribute towards an increase in housing supply.

Mr Ellis also argued that the scale and design of the development would be appropriate for the location and would not have an adverse impact on the character of the adjoining Town Centre Conservation Area.

He said: “Although not an employment scheme, the development would create construction jobs and housing and contribute to the local economy.”
