Macc kick off with clean bill of health
MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey insists his side will not get carried away with some of their impressive performances in pre-season.
The Silkmen have played quite well during some of their friendlies over the past few weeks, beating the likes of Bury and Crewe.
While there have been plenty of positives to take, Askey says none of it matters if they don’t perform in their opening National League match against Wrexham this weekend.
“I think if somebody said to us in the summer that we were going to do this well in pre-season we’d have snapped their hands off but it means nothing.
“All we’re doing now is concentrating on Wrex- ham,” he told the club’s official website.
“They’ve all been tough games.
“I thought against Derby we did really well and we conceded when we changed the team.
“Bury was a good result and to get a win against a League One club was also very good.
“Then against Stockport we fell apart when we changed the team, and then the last game versus Crewe was a good result and it could’ve been more.”
Macclesfield’s last preseason game of the summer took place on Saturday, suffering a 2-0 defeat to League One side Blackpool.
Despite the loss, the Silkmen performed well, and Askey was pleased with what he saw from his players.
“I thought we did well against Blackpool. When we changed things, we fell apart a little bit but I know the reason why, but I’ve been pretty pleased,” he said.
“We weren’t getting carried away after beating Crewe and we won’t get carried away about losing because again I thought we were in the game and we created the best chance of the match.
“Pre-season has been good as we’ve not got any injuries and that’s the main thing that everybody looks fit.
“Overall it’s gone well so hopefully we can put in more good performances in the league.”
Macclesfield’s opening game against Wrexham takes place at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday, and Askey will be hoping that his team can get things under way with a victory.
