Widen sustainable travel across the area
The Department for Transport (DfT) has recently made significant funds available to local authorities in support of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure improvements for active travel, in particular for ‘safe space’ provisions in these current social distancing times.
This also aligns to the council’s recently approved Climate Emergency Strategy and its Cycling Action Plan 2018-2028.
The initial proposals for £140,000 submitted by RBWM council have been solely focused on town centre modifications in Maidenhead, Windsor, and Ascot, eg signage changes and removal of street furniture on the high street.
A full ‘active travel’ remit would facilitate walking and cycling more widely within the borough, thereby reducing car traffic and pollution, and improving health.
Examples could include extending pavements near local schools and shops, and implementing safe cycle routes past the A4 dual carriageway to Maidenhead station or the new Magnet centre. I would encourage residents to share their insights of local pinchpoints through contribution to the crowdsourcing website widenmypath. com, and for RBWM council to seize the opportunity for more ambitious changes to borough transport infrastructure.
