‘Gunman’ in siege with police

-

ARMED police were surrounding a house in Stockport late last night following reports of a man with a gun.

Officers were called to Heath Road next to Cale Green Park in Shaw Heath shortly after 7pm after residents reported seeing a man with a firearm.

Paramedics and firefighters were also scrambled to the scene, with cordons placed at the junctions with Beech Road and Bramhall Lane.

Two helicopters were seen circling overhead and a fire service drone pilot was also called. Police said a number of homes ‘in the immediate area’ were evacuated. GMP said armed officers and specialist negotiators were at the scene and ‘working to gain control of the situation’. A spokesman added: “It is not believed there are any injuries. This is not terror related.”

Residents said the man thought to be at the centre of the incident was in his ‘40s or 50s’ and had lived on the road for around three-and-a-half years.

Shocked neighbours said the incident ‘sounded like a horror scene’ and claimed people were ‘running for their lives’ when they reportedly saw a man with a gun.
