‘Theo’s a credit to the force’

A HERO dog handler has described how he and his German Shepherd tracked down four armed robbers to their ‘safe house’.

Casting his mind back to the night of the robbery, Pc Gareth Greaves spoke of how he and Theo chased down the thieves.

He said: “We tracked them for a mile over concrete, which is very hard.

“Our dogs are trained to follow the most recent scent to the exclusion of all others. They’re fixed.

“The trouble with concrete is that it doesn’t hold a scent.

“It depends on the weather but a scent can be lost in minutes.

“What made it more difficult for us was that it was a very busy road.”

But despite the challenging environment Theo was able to lock on to the thieves’ smell.

He added: “Initially it was a strong track. You get a feeling and can just tell. Then there was a part when it lessened. But when it came back it just seemed to get stronger and stronger.”

He said he is ‘extremely humbled’ but that his dog, Theo, deserves the real credit.

He said: “He’s a credit to the force and to me.”
