Midfielders should take Pogba chance
JOSE Mourinho has said Paul Pogba’s injury will give Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini opportunities in the United midfield.
Herrera has started just two games this season but was substituted in both and Fellaini is yet to make a start, despite his impressive showings when coming off the bench.
The Belgian scored his second goal of the season in the midweek Champions League win over Basel and was man of the match, but Carrick remained on the sidelines and has not made an appearance this season.
Mourinho said Pogba is due to miss a ‘few matches’ and spoke encouragingly about his midfield options to supplement new signing Nemanja Matic. “We have players and we have players waiting for an opportunity,” Mourinho said.
“Because we started the season really well with one match per week, no need for resting, no need for changes, we were basically going with the same players, but there are good players more than ready to play.
“So, honestly, we miss Pogba, we need Pogba, but we have good players. Herrera, Fellaini and Carrick – they are waiting for a real chance to start the matches and to play matches from the beginning and they are ready, so this is also our way of thinking.
“We lost important players last season during the season in crucial moments of the season and we were not crying or getting excuses about that.”
