Take a pot at Higgins’ former home for £2m

- By DAN GLEDHILL

THE former home of ex-world snooker champ Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins has come onto the market in Mottram St Andrew.

Delveron House is an impressive five-bedroom home set in 1.3 acres of Cheshire countryside, right in the centre of the ‘Golden Triangle,’ an affluent area bordered by Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Prestbury.

Higgins, who died in 2010, bought the house for somewhere between £235,000 and £400,000 in the mid-1980s as a surprise for wife Lynn.

The couple and their two children had previously lived on Bridge Drive, in Cheadle, Stockport, which was home to the Hurricane when he lifted the 1982 World Snooker Championship trophy.

The current asking price for Delveron House stands at a cool £2,250,000 – half-a-million more than it sold for back in 2007 and nearly £1.4m more than its price in 2001.

In 1986, Delveron House briefly had the most famous doorstep in the country after Higgins and his manager Howard Kruger hastily convened a press conference at the front door following Higgins’ head-butt of a tournament official in Preston. Adding typical Higgins theatre to the occasion, the star broke off halfway through to answer a call on his mobile phone – a real status symbol back in the mid-1980s despite it being the size of a house brick.

Today, Delveron House has been tastefully and sympathetically remodelled.

The reception hall has polished wood flooring and a turning flight staircase leading to a galleried landing.

There are five bedrooms, each with en-suite or wet rooms – and with a tasteful balance of traditional and contemporary fittings.

Deep granite kitchen work units and a conservatory are other highlights of the property.

Delveron House is situated in the charming village of Mottram St Andrew, with a renowned local primary school, a wealth of country walks and close to the Bull’s Head pub.

It was after a trip to this pub that Higgins once again catapulted Delveron House into the news.

The evening ended with Higgins being arrested after throwing a television through the property’s leaded windows.

Higgins said he originally fell in love with the house after peering through a window and seeing the wood-panelled snooker room.

The star purchased the snooker table upon which he won the 1982 World Championship and had it installed in the games room at Delveron House.

While the table might not still be in situ, the good news is that if a nostalgic snooker fan becomes the new owner they have the space to revive the snooker room and try to recreate some of the old Higgins magic.
