More local buses needed
I AM so pleased that Coun Mark Aldred, chairman of the TfGM Committee, has come up with the brilliant option of the free Manchester city centre bus service – and to run until 10pm – how marvellous.
What a pity he cannot use the same thoughtful idea to provide a necessary bus service from Middleton to Oldham – namely the number 415.
This service used to run every 15 minutes, then it was revised to run every 20 minutes. Another revision followed to make it a 30-minute service – I must point out that they have given the would-be passengers on the route a sort of practice run for the again revised service of one an hour.
I say we were given a sort of practice run as quite frequently one of the half-hourly service buses would be missing, so we had an idea what it would be like to wait for an hour for the next one.
Several times I have been told that the 415 is a ‘luxury’ service – yes, it’s a luxury when one turns up.
The wife of a bus driver told me that if a driver is missing from another service, for example the 409 or 83, then a driver is taken off the 415 route.
Coun Angeliki Stogia, executive member for transport, is also giving a rapturous response to the free city service. I would guess that neither of the councillors quoted have elderly relatives living on a rubbish bus route. Get your priorities right, councillors, and get really necessary routes working properly. If you can provide drivers for a free bus service, running every ten minutes through to 10pm, you should be able to organise a much-needed local bus service. Margaret H, Chadderton
