TRANSPORT bosses have released more details about the £1 Early Bird Metrolink ticket offer - confirming it will only be available until Christmas Eve.

The Early Bird scheme is aimed at easing congestion on Manchester’s roads and hopes to ease the strain of travel costs for seasonal, part-time and shift workers.

Transport for Greater Manchester have confirmed the scheme will begin this Monday.

It will only be available on weekdays up until Christmas Eve as part of a pilot.

Travel bosses will then analyse the results of the trial, before the potential launch of a longer-term ‘prepeak’ ticket offer.

There will be two types of ticket for commuters:

An ‘Early Bird’ ticket which must be bought before 7am and allows unlimited travel across the Metrolink network. The final journey must be completed by 7.30am.

An ‘Early Bird Plus’ ticket which costs £3 and must also be bought before 7am. It gives passengers unlimited travel on all Metrolink services until 7.30am as well as unlimited travel between 1pm and 3.30pm and unlimited travel from 7pm until the last tram. The tickets are only available on the ‘Get me there’ app and cannot be purchased at Metrolink ticket machines. Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “Congestion is a major problem that is affecting people’s lives on a daily basis.

“Additional trams and tram lines, improved cycling and walking infrastructure and the Manchester and Salford Inner Relief Route works will all help in the long run, but they will take time to bear fruit.

“The Early Bird is one of a range of measures being introduced to help improve things here and now and in advance of the busy festive period, making it easier for people to re-time their journey and avoid the traffic by trying the tram.”

More information is available at www.tfgm.com/earlybird .
