History will be preserved in buildings
THE Salford University team will be creating an archive of materials including a selection of the tiles, believed to have been manufactured by Mintons in Staffordshire.
Eventually this may well make its way into a display at one of the city’s museums, most likely the Museum of Science and Industry.
Developer U+I has promised to incorporate the tiles into the final design of their building.
Graham Mottershead said: “When we look at the Industrial Revolution, we look at houses and factories, steam engines and trains, but there were lots of other innovations and public health was one of them.
“These early bath houses were built by private companies, they weren’t built by the local authority. It took the local authority 40 years to cotton on and start doing it themselves.”
