THE GREAT OUTDOORS
If the gym closures have got you considering exercising outside, EMMA JOHNSON and KATIE WRIGHT have got you covered
WITH lockdown restrictions upon us once more, getting that daily exercise is more important than ever. Not only does it give you a chance to get out of the house, getting moving can provide a muchneeded mental health boost at a time when we need it most.
Whether you’re heading out for a walk or run, doing a socially distanced workout in the park with that one other person, or lucky enough to have a garden you can use for an intense HIIT session, our fitness fashion needs are a bit different in the colder months.
When it comes to winter sportswear, it’s all about layers.
For garden workouts, team your leggings with a tight, long-sleeved top in a stretchy high-tech fabric that allows enough movement when you’re on the mat, then layer up with a loose sweatshirt or zip-up top you can whip off once you’re warmed up.
If you are normally a fan of capri leggings (the ones that stop just past your knee) and want to try running, a longer length may serve you better – no one wants cold ankles.
You could even try compression tights under running shorts. Not only do these aid muscle recovery but they are great for keeping limbs warm on long runs. Add a lightweight hoodie or jacket on top – a reflective or high-vis fabric is a smart choice for early morning or evening runs, while the days are still on the short side.
And don’t forget your head and hands. You don’t want to be cutting your workout short because your fingers or ears are frozen.
From leggings to outerwear, here’s our pick to keep you warm
(but not too warm!) while you workout outdoors...
