The Golden Sausage: Help us find Britain’s best biker café

The hunt for the best biker café continues as we visit The Haven

A‘Motorcyclists Welcome’ sign can be a real sight for sore eyes and it certainly appealed to us as we reached The Haven near Salisbury, after a long ride. Our latest contender for the Golden Sausage Award has been standing aside the A30 for some 60 odd years, but The Haven has more to offer than a traditional roadside nosebag. Current owner, Kirsty Wells, has created a veritable oasis where the weary traveller can find much-needed respite. “We work hard to maintain very high standards of service,” says Kirsty, “but it’s not just about serving up food and drink, we strive to provide a friendly atmosphere.”

All dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients, cooked to order and served with pride; even our sausage and egg bap arrived perfectly presented with Kirsty’s home-made brown sauce on the side. This tasty custom condiment reflects an attention to detail that runs throughout The Haven. And yes, it does taste better than HP. For Steve Milsom and Chris Trainor, The Haven is a regular stop. “It’s a lovely place to chill at the end of a ride,” says Steve. “The free visor cleaning station always comes in handy, too.” Chris and Carol Reynolds often drop by on their Triumph Thunderbird. “It’s clean with quick service, not to mention proper tea and coffee,” enthused Carol.

There are few places more welcoming than The Haven and it certainly lives up to its name. With the Super Sunshine breakfast (essentially a full English) costing a snip under £10, prices are at the upper end of the scale, but factor in the personal touch and The Haven is a definite contender.
