It’s not too late to build a leaner, stronger body for the beach – but un­less your only hol­i­day plan is to pound daiquiries on a lounger, it’s worth mak­ing your­self more func­tional in the process. Per­for­mance coach Chris Burgess has de­vised a work­out that’ll do all that with noth­ing but a ruck­sack and a chair. Feel the burn now and en­joy the sun, surf and Soleros later.

DI­REC­TIONS

Do each move in turn, rest­ing as lit­tle as pos­si­ble. Then rest for a minute and re­peat. Do the whole cir­cuit a to­tal of three times.

REPS 6 EACH SIDE

‘This is the ul­ti­mate core builder,’ says Burgess, ‘but it also lays a solid foun­da­tion for a strong body.’ Fill a ruck­sack with some­thing ap­pro­pri­ately heavy, then heft it onto one shoul­der as you go from ly­ing to stand­ing and back again. Com­plete all the reps on one side, then switch.
