I’m off on my first-ever trail run this week­end. How can I avoid fall­ing flat on my face?

Take it easy. You’ll get in­jured if you start fast with a sixminute mile pace in mind.

What about the climbs? I’m not sure the tread­mill’s 4% in­cline has prepped me well enough…

Hike the steep sec­tions. Strong strides with your hands on your thighs can be as speedy as jog­ging – and you won’t be shat­tered when you hit the top.

Do I need to change my run­ning tech­nique?

Shorten your stride; this boosts trac­tion to make re­cov­ery easy if you slip. And keep your eyes up to an­tic­i­pate the ter­rain.

But I can go in my nor­mal run­ning shoes, right?

Wrong, mate. Ditch the Nikes for a pair with a de­cent tread, like the Inov-8 X-talon 230s.

Leave the head­phones at home, too?
