Hotel plan unveiled
THORNABY could be the latest place to get a new hotel as part of a boom for the industry on Teesside.
Outline plans detail a modern 80-bed hotel, along with a separate 200-seat “banqueting hall” on land at Hollybush Farm off Thornaby Road, between Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick.
The 4000sqm scheme would be built on fields to the west and south of the existing Shell garage.
Several deer have been seen gambolling across the overgrown site.
Planning permission has already been granted for a market garden centre on the site, and has been renewed several times since 1995.
But agents on behalf of the applicant, Hollybush Leisure Limited, said the proposed market garden centre is no longer considered financially viable.
They say the proposed hotel is a “far more acceptable” development and would support both Thornaby and the rest of Stockton borough.
The agents said the scheme will make a “significant contribution to the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the area”.
They expect the hotel to generate linked trips to Thornaby town centre and provide a “high number of new jobs” depending on the end operator.
It is expected access to the site would be through the arrangements as detailed under the previous application.
Cars would access the hotel from Thornaby Road and through the existing petrol filling station before travelling in a “loop formation” back onto Thornaby Road.
A decision on the outline application will be made before May 16.
If granted, detailed design plans would then need to be submitted for approval.
This latest application comes as part of a hotel boom on Teesside, following plans for a new Premier Inn in Middlesbrough and a boutique hotel on Yarm High Street.
And last week, Stockton Council’s Cabinet approved plans to borrow £17m to build a 125-bed hotel on a former dairy site on Bishop Street in the centre of Stockton.
A spokesman for the council said the application by Hollybush has “no implications” for its joint venture with Hampton by Hilton.
