Michael goes a long way to help charity
A CYCLIST is to ride four marathons after a series of “wake-up calls” prompted him to get fit.
Michael Dearlove, from Billingham, slimmed down from 19 stone after being diagnosed with diabetes in June 2015.
He decided to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care when he got wake-up call number two - the death of a close friend from the disease.
Michael, who works for Stockton Council, applied to ride the London 100 marathon, but was initially unsuccessful.
He was then approached by charity Macmillan Cancer Care to ride on their behalf, but that wasn’t enough for him.
“I decided to do three more rides for the same charity,” he said. “I thought if I combined them all together it’s a bit more interesting.”
Michael will take part in four cycling marathons: the Coast to Coast in May, followed by Prudential RideLondon 2017, the Selby 3 Swans Sportive 2017 then finally the Velo Birmingham 2017. By then he will have cycled 450 miles.
The father-of-two said: “For me, it’s a big challenge as I’m still new to this.”
