Trust aims to open another free school
PLANS for a new secondary school and sixth form in Middlesbrough are being proposed to meet “growing demand” for school places in the town.
Outwood Grange Academies Trust has applied to open a new 1118 academy - Outwood Academy James Cook - as a free school in the TS4 and central area of the town.
The trust plans to open the new school in September 2019 and promises to build a “new state of the art building”.
However, no exact location for the school - which would become Teesside’s second secondary free school - has been revealed.
Outwood Grange already runs Outwood Academy Bydales, in Marske, Outwood Academy Acklam, Outwood Academy Ormesby and in September last year began sponsoring Bishopsgarth School in Stockton.
In a statement, the trust said: “We have a well-established commitment to the families and community of Middlesbrough and already successfully lead Outwood Academy of Acklam, ranked in the top 3% nationally for its progress and Outwood Academy Ormesby, a rapidly improving school that received its highest ever results in 2016.
“As part of the Outwood Grange family of schools, the new academy will operate our well-established and highly regarded systems, curriculum and inclusive education.
“All students will access a broad and balanced knowledge-rich curriculum.”
The trust said the academy would specialise in mathematics.
It is planned the school will take in 210 Year 7 students in September 2019.
It is then aimed to grow to its full capacity of 1,050 secondary places and 400 sixth form places by 2024 “to meet the growing demand for secondary school places in Middlesbrough”.
The trust added: “We want to en- gage with local people to share our aspirations and plans for the school and are very interested in your views.
“We invite you to visit our website to find out more about our vision and the excellent education we offer our students.
“We welcome your comments, encourage you to register your support online, complete our online survey and sign up for updates on future meetings.”
The first meeting is at Outwood Academy, Acklam, on Thursday, March 16, from 5.30pm-6.30pm.
