Cheers for ‘new’ pub
AFTER several years of closure a community pub has reopened – and it’ll set regulars back only £2.60 a pint.
The Thorntree pub on the Greenway in the Middlesbrough estate finally reopened last Friday after years of being left derelict.
After a major refurbishment, the pub is unrecognisable. New landlord is 55-year-old David Dean, a former bit-part actor who featured in the likes of Only Fools and Horses and Casualty before running his first pub 12 years ago.
He said: “I think this pub in recent years has been run as a high street pub in the community when it’s not a high street pub – it’s a community pub.
“It’s about bringing the community together – people helping other people. It’s somewhere people can come and get to know each other properly.
“We let the kids play football in the car park. We put the floodlights on for them – so long as they keep it away from the cars and windows, what’s the problem?”
David said one of the biggest selling points of the newly refurbished watering hole is the prices – with most pints costing just £2.60. “I started off at £3 a pint,” he said. “The first night was busy but then the Saturday and Sunday were very quiet. Through talking to people, I kept hearing that they thought the prices were too high for the area.
“Since I’ve dropped the prices, it’s been getting busier and busier.”
